Digital Divide U.S. Map

Across the country, millions of people living in under-resourced communities don’t have access to basic technology many people take for granted: Internet access, a computer, or the skills to use digitally connected devices. This disparity between resourced and under-resourced communities is known as the “digital divide." Digital exclusion permeates into every aspect of life, creating educational, economic, and career disenfranchisement. As part of Alliant’s social mission, we’re taking a stand to help bridge the gap, and taking action to create digital equity for all.

What is the digital divide?

From children in low-income households who are unable to complete their homework because they don’t have a computer, to isolated neighbors in rural areas struggling to make doctor appointments online due to lack of internet access, communities and individuals need our help.

The divide impacts multiple groups nationwide.

  • It disproportionately impacts communities of color: 29% of Black households and 35% of Latinx households are without a broadband connection.1
  • 1 in 5 parents with children say their homework can’t be completed due to computer access or an unreliable internet connection.2
  • 17 million Americans in rural areas are impacted by unreliable connections, or internet price gouging.3
  • 52 million adults lack basic digital skills, so even when they’re given devices, those devices are left disconnected and unused.3

Why Alliant is taking a stand

It’s simple: Helping people succeed is in our DNA.

As a digital financial institution, we understand how deeply intertwined digital connectedness is with financial wellbeing. Alliant’s member-first philosophy means that we focus on individuals’ success holistically. That’s why we’ve pledged to help bridge the digital divide for all – so everyone can achieve financial independence through digital inclusion.
