Tips to make opening a new checking account easier, from Alliant experts

  • Switch your checking account when you have a cash cushion, such as after receiving a bonus or tax refund or if you have a three-paycheck month.
  • Open your new account 1 to 2 weeks before you plan to switch banks; this will give you time to set up all your new transfers and bill pays.
  • Don't forget all the digital platforms that use your debit card & checking account info, like digital wallets (like PayPal and Venmo) or online retailers.
  • Keep an eye on your old account. It could take a month or two for some vendors to start debiting your new checking account!
  • Before closing your old account, check to make sure no automatic debits are occurring. If they are, switch them to your new Alliant account.
